Thumbs up for mobile hitchhiking game's prospects
Mar 04, 2012 (Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Going my way?
Android and iPhone users who want to travel the globe but can't afford the airfare can sign up for Hitchery, a free mobile game, location-based app and social platform where users create "hitchers" that see the worldwide sights from phone to phone.
"We take all of the good stuff, the romantic parts and fun, serendipitous parts of actual hitchhiking and bring those in a safe way into the digital world," said Glen Daniels, the startup's founder and CEO. Hitchery formally launches next month but already counts hundreds of test users locally and abroad.
"It's definitely not a major mass media firehose like Twitter and Facebook," Daniels said of Hitchery. "We're providing a much more constrained and intimate social experience, much like you'd have when you encounter someone in the real world in a real physical space."
Hitchery has worked with Hub advertising agency Hill Holliday on the application's design, game dynamics and marketing strategy to potential clients.
"One of Hill Holliday's accounts is Major League Baseball. A lot of people dream about visiting all the ballparks. Maybe you can have a hitcher who goes and visits all the parks, and gets some kind of real world award, like a sweatshirt," Daniels, 43, told the Herald.
When hitchers check into places, they can see how many other traveling avatars are there and opt to take a ride on that person's phone, which is called a "bus." If hitchers are stuck in a situation or place they don't want to be in, users can easily "call them home" or "hop off the bus," Daniels said.
"Anytime you're not happy, you can get yourself out," he said.
