BRIEF: Packman returns to local radio
Mar 15, 2012 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Longtime Charlotte sports broadcaster Mark Packer is returning to the local airwaves.
Packer, who left WFNZ-AM ("Fan" 610) in 2010 after 13 years, debuts today on WRFX-FM ("Fox" 99.7). He'll do "Packman on Sports" segments at 4:45 and 6:45 weekdays with afternoon host Jeff Kent.
Packer, who still does sports commentary on WJZY (Channel 46) news at 10 p.m., has most recently been doing college sports weekday mornings on SiriusXM's Channel 91, from his home studio.
"My commute is six feet," he says. "You can't beat it."
Packer says the short segments on WRFX-FM -- probably 3 to 5 minutes on the sports topics of the day -- is an appealing format. "I don't want to do a 3- or 4-hour local show after doing a national show all morning. It's a whole new mindset."
