Fresno robber returns to steal surveillance video
Jun 14, 2012 (The Fresno Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A burglar who stole a laptop overnight at a state office in Fresno apparently returned early Thursday morning to take video evidence at gunpoint.
California Highway Patrol officers were investigating the bizarre case at the state Department of Pesticide Regulation office near Shaw Avenue and First Street. The CHP is in charge of the case because it happened at a state agency.
A CHP spokesman said the crime is probably connected to a burglary at the office Wednesday night.
Someone broke into the office about 7 p.m. and took a laptop computer and a docking port for the machine.
The spokesman said an alarm was triggered and a worker came to the office but did not see anyone there.
Thursday, a worker in the office told investigators that she saw a man standing at the door about 7:30 a.m. She said the man broke glass and entered the building.
She confronted the man, who was wearing what appeared to be a pesticide agency uniform and was using bolt cutters to open a case protecting a digital video recorder.
The man pulled out a black handgun and told the woman to sit down and look out the window. He then cut through the case and took the recorder.
"This is what I came back for," he reportedly told the woman before fleeing in a pickup from the agency's fleet.
Officers were checking video surveillance cameras at nearby businesses to see whether there is video of the man, who was described as white, about 5-foot-10 and 220 pounds.
