Bengals too much for 'Cats
OGDEN, Nov 08, 2012 (Standard-Examiner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The Weber State University women's volleyball team battled against rival Idaho State on Wednesday night, but the league-leading Bengals' attack was a little too hot to stop.
Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Biggs led the Wildcats with a career-high 16 kills and hit .323, but Weber State fell 25-17, 25-17, 24-26, 25-13 to Idaho State in Big Sky Conference action on Wednesday night at Swenson Gym.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Mariah Katoa added eight kills and two blocks, while senior setter Caitlin Penrod had 40 assists and 13 digs for Weber State.
Idaho State, which improved to 15-2 in Big Sky play (21-5 overall) was led by Tressa Lyman's 15 kills. Weber State fell to 3-14 in Big Sky play, 10-19 overall.
The Bengals captured the first two sets by identical eight-point margins to take a 2-0 lead in the match at the intermission.
The Wildcats fought back in the third set and cut the deficit to 2-1 after winning the back-and-forth third set. Weber State led 20-17, but Idaho State rallied to take a 23-22 lead.
A kill by Katoa tied it at 23-23, and then WSU went ahead 24-23 before ISU tied it at 24.
A Bengals' service error put Weber State back in front, and the Wildcats closed it out on a block by Penrod and junior outside hitter Shanae Burgin.
Weber State will return to action on Saturday when the Wildcats face Sacramento State at 7 p.m. at Swenson Gym.
The match will be the fi- nal home contest of the season for Weber State, with the Wildcats' three seniors set to be honored prior to the match.
--USU AIMS FOR WAC TITLE: Hitting the road for the final time of the regular season, Utah State volleyball will head to San Jose, Calif., to take on San Jose State on Saturday.
First serve from SJSU's Spartan Gym is slated for 8 p.m. (MT).
USU (19-7 overall, 14-2 in WAC) has already clinched the top seed in the WAC tournament and at least a share of the regular-season title, but the Aggies can win their first WAC regularseason championship outright with a win Saturday.
USU's last conference title was winning the Eastern Division of the Big West in 1999.
