Home invasion suspect caught in West Virginia

CUMBERLAND, Nov 08, 2012 (Cumberland Times-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A city man was arrested Thursday in Mineral County, W.Va., in connection with an alleged robbery Monday afternoon of a man who had given him a ride to the area of Hilltop Drive and Louisiana Avenue. He has also been charged with three home invasions that occurred in the same area at about dawn Tuesday, according to the C3I Unit.


Jerome Joseph Phillips III, 35, was arrested by the Mineral County Sheriff's Department at an unknown location on a warrant obtained by C3I investigators.

Cumberland Police investigated the incident that occurred at about 3:20 p.m. Monday when the suspect approached a 49-year-old man at a business on Baltimore Street and requested a ride to Hilltop Drive.

Police said the victim agreed to give the suspect a ride and that the suspect pushed the victim and reached for a bag containing several prescription bottles when he was getting out of the vehicle. The bag tore and the victim struck the suspect in the face. The suspect was able to get one of the bottles and ran away.

The victim was not injured and no weapon was displayed during the incident.

Police were unable to locate the suspect.

Video surveillance from the business where the suspect approached the victim was reviewed and a still photo of the suspect was provided to law enforcement.

Phillips was developed as a suspect and an arrest warrant was issued for his arrest.

Charged initially with robbery and theft, Phillips remained jailed Thursday in the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in Augusta, W.Va., without bond, pending extradition to Allegany County.

Late Thursday morning, C3I announced that Phillips was charged by arrest warrant with burglary, assault, weapons and theft charges stemming from the home invasions on Louisiana Avenue and nearby areas.

In one incident, he allegedly kicked in the rear door of a residence and assaulted an elderly woman with a knife. The victim cut her finger when she struck the suspect in the chest. The suspect grabbed medications and then ran. Two other residences in the area were entered at about the same time, Cumberland Police said.

All four incidents remain under investigation by the Cumberland Police Department and C3I.
