[November 15, 2012] OPS searches for persons of interest in weekend hotel slaying Nov 15, 2012 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Odessa police were searching Wednesday for a man and a woman considered "persons of interest" in the slaying of John Anthony Monroy at the MCM Elegante Hotel early Sunday morning. The people, shown in stills taken from the hotel's video surveillance, were a black man wearing a white shirt, jeans and a cap, and a white or Hispanic woman wearing a dark jacket or sweatshirt. Odessa Crime Stoppers described the man as between ages 25 and 35, and the woman as between ages 25 and 30. They left the parking lot in a metallic gold or silver SUV with 20- or 22-inch wheels, Crime Stoppers reported. Officers responding to a call of shots fired at 1:06 a.m. found Monroy, 29, lying dead in the southwest parking lot of the hotel from an apparent gunshot wound to the head, an OPD news release stated. (Police provided an incorrect spelling of the Monroy's name in initial releases). OPD have so far declined to provide further details about the slaying, citing the ongoing investigation. After the slaying, Monroy's body was sent to Tarrant County for an autopsy. The hotel provided investigators with the security tapes, which also show the victim trying to enter the bar area with a group of people, said Ed Lasater, president of ICA Properties Inc., the group that owns the Elegante, in an interview with the Odessa American earlier this week. Police would not comment about the tapes. Lascaster said the bar denied access to group, of unknown size, because it was "rowdy" and then the group left "without incident." During that time, Lancaster said, security patrols were stationed inside the bar, inside the hotel and outside the hotel doors. The group who tried to enter the bar with the victim were not guests at the hotel, Lasater said. Carruth said that investigators would not comment on what was on the tapes or if the victim was seen entering the bar in the footage, adding the case was still ongoing.
