Man accused of stealing baby care items from Kroger stores
DECATUR, Nov 30, 2012 (Herald & Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Police arrested a 26-year-old Decatur man Wednesday afternoon after he was tied to three retail thefts totaling more than $600 worth of baby supplies.
On Sept. 29, Decatur police officer Brent Morey responded to Kroger, 1401 W. King St., in reference to a retail theft.
A loss prevention employee told Morey video footage had been found of an unknown male taking a sippy cup and nearly $161 worth of baby formula on Sept. 28 about 4 p.m.
The employee noted that the suspect went past all points of sale without attempting to pay for the items.
On Nov. 25, officer Josh Kesinger responded to a separate retail theft incident at Kroger, 3070 N. Water St., where the same loss prevention employee said that on Nov. 17, video surveillance recorded a male taking 23 canisters of baby formula, totaling nearly $390, according to a sworn police statement.
On Nov. 28, Kesinger responded to a retail theft incident at the same Kroger, where employees had detained a suspect.
The store manager told Kesinger he'd seen the suspect selecting baby items in the store and, recognizing him as the same person who'd stolen from the store in the past, began following him.
The manager noted that after the suspect had pushed the baby items, which included baby wipes and diapers, past all points of sale, he saw the manager and approached him for a job.
The manager said he and the suspect discussed a job, and then the suspect took the items out of the store.
Stopping the suspect, the manager took him back in the store to wait for police.
After arresting the suspect at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday at Kroger and reading him his Miranda rights, the suspect admitted taking multiple canisters of baby formula from Kroger, Kesinger stated.
The suspect is being held in the Macon County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond. He is due to be arraigned Dec. 6.
