3 sought for Christmas Eve incidents at Zaxby's, Dunkin' Donuts

Dec 27, 2012 (The Beaufort Gazette (Beaufort - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Three men who stole cash drawers from a Zaxby's restaurant in Beaufort on Christmas Eve began their night of crime at a Dunkin' Donuts, but stopped short after seeing the doughnut shop was occupied, police say.


At 2:45 a.m. Monday, the back door to Dunkin' Donuts at 2427 Boundary St. was opened by a man with a bandana over his face. He apparently thought he and his two cohorts would be alone in the store. Employees working in the restaurant later told police the man "appeared surprised that anyone was inside" and ran without taking anything.

Beaufort police were able to obtain video surveillance footage that showed the three men wearing bandanas over their faces at the doughnut shop.

A few hours later, the three culprits struck the Zaxby's at 210 Robert Smalls Parkway, police say. The restaurant was empty, and the men stole two cash drawers, according to Police Chief Matt Clancy. Video surveillance showed the same three masked men.

A Zaxby's employee arrived at about 8 a.m. and found the front door damaged and the cash-register drawers missing, Clancy said. Each drawer contained a small amount of cash, he said.

The men had not been identified as of Wednesday night, Clancy said.
