Former Freedom teacher facing additional charge

Jan 10, 2013 (Beaver County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NEW SEWICKLEY TWP. -- A former Freedom Area High School teacher and coach caught on camera providing two students with drugs is facing an additional charge, according to New Sewickley Township police.


Police added a charge Wednesday of illegal delivery of Percocet prescription pain medication against John Curtis "J.C." Summers, 41, of 3465 Darlington Road, Darlington Township. He was charged in November with possession of drug paraphernalia and corruption of minors.

Police added the new charge after laboratory tests confirmed that a white powdery substance found on items in Summers' school office was Percocet.

Summers, who had been a health and physical education teacher in the district since the 2000-01 school year and was briefly the head football coach in 2008, resigned his position after being arrested on Nov. 27.

Summers came under suspicion when someone contacted New Sewickley in November about possible misconduct by a Freedom Area faculty member and police informed Superintendent Jeffrey Fuller.

According to police, Fuller then placed a video surveillance camera in Summers' office and turned over five videos, covering Nov. 19 to 21, to police on Nov. 23.

When police reviewed the video they observed Summers crushing a pill and using a tube from his desk drawer to inhale it. They also reported that Summers provided a pill to one male student and a tube for inhaling the substance to another male student.

Both boys, who are not being identified because of their age, have been charged in Beaver County Juvenile Court with possession of a controlled substance, New Sewickley police Chief Ronald Leindecker said Thursday.

Summers is free on $25,000 bond. He faces a preliminary hearing on Feb. 22.
