Landline MMS service launched in Azerbaijan

Jan 17, 2013 (Trend News Agency - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Baku Telephone Communications Production Association (PA) of The Azerbaijani Communications and Information Technologies Ministry launched a multimedia messaging service (MMS) for landline phones, Deputy Director General Khankishi Kishiyev of the association told Trend on Wednesday.


He said the company plans to purchase server hardware which will be used to provide MMS services. The service will be based on IP protocol and delivered in telecommunication nodes built based on NGN (Next Generation Network).

"A SIP-phone is required for using MMS service. It is the same as the VoIP-phone (or softphone) that enables phone calls using VoIP (voice over IP) technology. IP phone numbers are assigned to individual subscribers in case of a change in residence" Kishiyev said.

All telecommunication centers will be transferred to NGN by late 2013. Currently, over 60% of Baku's automatic telephone system is built on NGN, which allows for the operator to provide broadband Internet and IP-TV along with the provision of traditional phone services.

The operator intends to stimulate the growth of the new services in the long term through transitioning to the NGN network, which is a priority goal. The transfer of telephone networks to NGN will allow the operator to increase the amount of available phone numbers and to render services such as IP-telephony, broadband Internet and IP-TV along with traditional communication services.
