$15K in cellphones robbed at gunpoint from Coral Springs T-Mobile store

Jan 18, 2013 (Sun Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- CORAL SPRINGS -- If there is any doubt that cellphones are among the most coveted consumer goods around, Coral Springs police say armed robbers held up a T-Mobile store's employees and stole 25 of the devices worth more than $15,000.

The incident happened Thursday around 9:15 p.m. at 1327 N. University Drive when a man and woman posed as customers before the man pulled out a handgun and ordered employees to the back of the store, Coral Springs Police Sergeant Brad McKeone said Friday.

The robbers were joined by another man who restrained the workers with zip ties before 25 Samsung Galaxy III S cellphones, worth an estimated $600 to $700 each, were taken along with cash. The trio fled in an unknown direction, police said.

This follows a Nov. 20 incident in Pompano Beach, when about $25,000 worth of phones and accessories were stolen during an armed robbery of an AT&T store.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said in that case the robbers also pretended to be customers before one of them put a weapon to a female employee's head, tied her up and pepper-sprayed her.

A man was arrested Jan. 6 in connection with the Pompano Beach incident and charged with armed robbery and kidnapping.

The robbers of the Coral Springs store stole or damaged video surveillance equipment before leaving, McKeone said.

The men being sought were both described as 20 to 30-years-old, 5 feet 9 to 6 feet 1 in height with short black hair. One wore a black leather jacket, blue button down shirt, blue jeans and black dress shoes.

The female was described as having long wavy black hair beneath a gray New York Yankees hat and wearing a blue and white dress. She was up to 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighed between 120 and 140 pounds.

Coral Springs police ask anyone with information about the case to call Detective Chris Collins at 954-346-1262 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
