Robber targets cellphone dealers, insurance agencies in Fort Worth

Feb 06, 2013 (Fort Worth Star-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man cloaked in a hooded sweatshirt and brandishing a small handgun has spent the past month robbing cellphone dealers and insurance agencies throughout Fort Worth, police say.

The man has crisscrossed the city to rob five insurance agencies and three Metro PCS stores, according to reports.

On Tuesday, Fort Worth police released video surveillance from one of the burglaries in hopes that someone might recognize him.

The latest robbery happened Monday at Baja Auto Insurance in the 3300 block of North Main Street, police said in a news release. The first was Jan. 3 at A Max Auto Insurance in the 6400 block of Meadowbrook Drive.

"Based on the suspect's actions, he is considered to be armed and dangerous," said Officer Daniel Segura, police spokesman.

In each of the incidents, the man enters the businesses, produces a small, dark-colored handgun and demands money. He speaks Spanish and English, according to the reports.

Police said he is a Hispanic man in his early to mid-20s, slender, and about 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 7 inches tall.

In the surveillance video, his face was partially covered with the hood from the sweatshirt; he wore dark, baggy pants and light-colored sneakers.

Police said the other robberies were: Jan. 8, Amco Auto Insurance, 4000 block South Freeway; Jan. 11, Metro PCS, 4100 block Hemphill Street; another Baja Auto Insurance, Jan. 15, 100 block West Seminary Drive; two more Metro PCS stores, one Jan. 24, 1000 block West Berry Street, the other Jan. 30, 6500 block Camp Bowie Drive; and another A Max Auto Insurance, also Jan. 30, in the 2400 block of NE 28th Street.

Segura urged anyone with information about the man to call 911, the Fort Worth Robbery Unit at 817-392-4370 or contact Crime Stoppers at 817-469-TIPS (8477), www.469tips.com.

"A reward up to $1,000 will be offered to anyone who provides a tip that leads to an arrest for a crime or a criminal case cleared," Segura said. "Remember, every tipster can remain anonymous."
