BRIEF: Police: Report of officer impersonation was fake

Feb 14, 2013 (Duluth News Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Superior police said Wednesday that a citizen report last month of being stopped by a male impersonating a Superior police officer was false, and no such stop occurred.


Charges are being considered against the person who made the report, police said.

On Jan. 14, the department received a report by someone who claimed to have been subjected to a traffic stop by a male claiming to be a member of the Superior Police Department. The reporting party said they were allowed to leave after providing vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

It was quickly determined that no official law enforcement agency was responsible for the alleged traffic stop, so the incident was initially classified as an "impersonating an officer" event and an investigation was opened.

According to a news release from Deputy Chief Nicholas Alexander, the investigation spurred recovery of video surveillance footage that refutes the original report and "clearly indicates that no such traffic stop ever occurred." Alexander said the case has been referred to the District Attorney's Office for consideration of charges, noting that providing false information to an officer is against the law in Wisconsin.
