Sewickley man accused in counterfeiting case

MOON TWP., Feb 20, 2013 (Beaver County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Sewickley man could be facing federal charges after he is accused of using counterfeit money to buy a laptop computer, which he then tried to return for cash at a Moon Township store, township police said.


Police said they were called to the Super Kmart on Marketplace Boulevard Tuesday evening on a report Craig Anthony Moore, 28, of 4 Rhodes Ave. was attempting to return a laptop that had been bought earlier in the day at the Kmart on Beaver Grade Road in Moon with counterfeit $20 bills.

Police said they were able to use video surveillance to determine Moore was the one who used the counterfeit bills to buy the $350 computer.

When officers took Moore into custody, they searched his sport-utility vehicle and found an ink cartridge, even though Moore denied either he or his parents had a printer. When asked why he bought the ink, he told officers it was for his aunt, but he only knew her by her first name, according to the report.

Moon police charged him with forgery, theft by deception, receiving stolen property and driving with a suspended license. He was released on a non-monetary bond. Moore is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.

Due to the nature of the crime, Moon police said they contacted the U.S. Secret Service, who are conducting their own investigation into Moore. An agent from the agency told police it appears Moore was the one who manufactured the phony bills, according to the report.
