Surveillance images of Waterville bank robbery released

Feb 22, 2013 (Bangor Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WATERVILLE, Maine -- Waterville detectives are following up on numerous leads in an investigation of a bank robbery reported Thursday afternoon.

Police are gathering evidence, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said Friday. Video surveillance images of the male suspect, who remains on the loose, have been released.

Just after 4:45 p.m. Thursday, a man reportedly walked into the KeyBank on Kennedy Memorial Drive, demanded cash and then fled the scene.

"Shortly before the robbery, a witness observed the suspect walking up from Kennedy Memorial Drive from the direction of downtown toward the bank," Rumsey said. "Detectives are investigating whether the suspect walked some distance to commit the robbery." Even though the suspect got away with cash, a dye bag was placed in the bag containing his stolen money, Rumsey said. Shortly after the robber left the bank, the pack exploded, which police believe resulted in the stolen cash and the robber being stained pink.


After the suspect left the scene, he walked behind the bank toward a cluster of office buildings, Rumsey said. A perimeter was established and a K-9 unit from the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office went to the scene, along with a dozen Waterville law enforcement officers, but the suspect was not found.

The suspect was wearing a long, medium- to dark-colored jacket, possibly a trenchcoat, along with a baseball cap and dark winter gloves at the time of the robbery, Rumsey said. He is described as a white male approximately 45 to 55 years old with a heavy build.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or who may have information on the robbery should call Waterville police at 680-4700 and ask to speak with Detective David Caron.
