TMCNet SIP Phones Week in Review

With the last week of 2012 now coming to a close, it's worth taking a short look back at all the news that was big in the field of session initiation protocol (SIP) phones. While it would be easy to think that a major holiday like Christmas would shut down the flow of news in this field, that's not to be, as the field generated some very big news indeed.

So settle in and let's run down all the biggest news of the last week of 2012 with our Week in Review.

Naturally, with the end of the year comes a look at the year that was and the year that is likely to be. With that in mind we examined some of the major trends that impacted 2012 in SIP phone technology, and several of the likely trends that may impact 2013.

An interview with Ken Dolsky, program director at T3i Group, showed some of these tendencies nicely. Not only was hosted telephony usage up significantly over 2011's numbers, but an unlikely target was generating much of that growth in the form of large rather than small and medium-sized businesses. Whether it's complacency or just certainty that's driving it, it's clear hosted systems will work, and that they're cost-effective.

A system that does the job at a decent price is hard to pass up, especially in a slow economy in which value is king and cash is tight.

But with the growth of hosted SIP phone systems, the need to choose just the right provider of these services also comes into play. We also took a look at just what needs to go into the decision making process when it comes time to figure out just who should be providing SIP phone services for a business. First, naturally, was to do the research. There are a lot of companies out there, so narrowing down the field to a few worthwhile candidates will make the whole thing go much more smoothly.

Additionally, users should look into the features offered by VoIP and SIP phones, as well as their own state of mind regarding phone services, as it's actually pretty different to go from regular landline service to VoIP.

We've seen a whole lot of movement in the SIP phone sector, but what will 2013 bring? The earliest days of 2013 are fast approaching, and when the dust settles, there's going to be plenty of news going on in the sector. Our global online community is constantly keeping a lookout for the biggest and best news in the sector, so be sure to come back here next week for all the biggest, not to mention every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
